Salary, Benefits, Housing and Life in New York City

Life in Manhattan

Life in Manhattan is unlike anywhere else in the world, and Weill Cornell Medicine is uniquely situated within one of the safest and most vibrant neighborhoods in the city, the Upper East Side. This picturesque neighborhood is home to Central Park, world-class museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim, designer shopping along Madison Avenue, the mansions of Park Avenue, and a plethora of restaurants. The rest of Manhattan and its countless treasures are all easily accessible from the Upper East Side and the Weill Cornell Medical College campus.

Benefits

Resident salary and benefits are highly competitive and adjusted for the cost of living in New York. All residents are eligible for housing in one of the Weill Cornell Medicine apartment buildings. Our resident housing is among the finest in the city, conveniently located and competitively priced.

All residents are entitled to four weeks of paid leave each year. Funding is available for conference travel when resident research is accepted to national meetings. Numerous additional benefits are provided to residents by NYP (e.g. housing stipend, food allowance, medical, dental, disability and life insurance, commuter, legal, leave, family, wellness, financial) and enumerated separately in supplemental materials.

Supplies

We provide incoming residents with the latest editions of the multi-volume American Academy of Ophthalmology Basic & Clinical Science Course textbooks and Wills Eye Manual, as well as a complete set of ophthalmic lenses (90D, 20D, and a four-mirror gonioscopy lens). In recent years, we have also provided residents with indirect ophthalmoscopes.

Housing

To take advantage of a mostly home-call system, our house staff are encouraged to live on the Upper East Side — although many choose to live elsewhere in New York City. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital does manage several modern apartment buildings within the neighborhood, though many residents secure great, affordable rentals on the Upper East Side independently.
