The Glaucoma Fellowship at Weill Cornell Medicine Israel Englander Department of Ophthalmology in New York City is designed to provide the fellow with breadth and depth in the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of all forms of glaucoma as well as facilitate collaborative opportunities for clinical, translational, and/or basic research. The fellow will work with Drs. Leila Rafla-Demetrious, Sarah H. Van Tassel, Paul Petrakos, and Colleen Maturana, all of whom are on the academic faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine, and Dr. Charles Cole, who is a voluntary attending. Surgical exposure includes phacoemulsification, microinvasive glaucoma surgery (iStent inject, Kahook dual blade, Hydrus, GATT, ECP, XEN gel stent, etc.), glaucoma drainage implants (Baerveldt, Ahmed, ClearPath), trabeculectomy, trab and tube revisions, and other anterior segment surgeries such as secondary intraocular lens implantation. Exposure to pediatric examinations under anesthesia and glaucoma surgery will be with Drs. Van Tassel and Petrakos as well as our pediatric ophthalmology colleague, Dr. Richard Levy. The fellows are expected to assist in the didactic, clinical, and surgical teaching of residents.
Most surgeries are performed at the David H. Koch Center, a world class ambulatory surgery center, where available resources include the LenSx femtosecond laser with Callisto, Verion, and ORA systems, Lumera 700 microscopes, and 3D heads-up visualization with the Ngenuity system.
Time away for conferences and courses is encouraged.
Application
At the time of appointment, the fellow should have satisfactorily completed 36 months of ophthalmology residency training.
All Glaucoma Fellowship applicants must be eligible for a full medical license per the New York State Education Office of Professions in Medicine. International medical graduates must also be eligible for an H-1B visa (eligibility includes passing all three steps of the USMLEs and reporting results to Weill Cornell Medicine Israel Englander Department of Ophthalmology prior to match deadline).
